Central Victorian school strikers meeting with Labor MP Lisa Chesters in Bendigo

Step 1: Find out who your federal politician is

If you don’t know who your Federal Politician is, find out by entering your postcode or electorate here. Do some research about them online to find out where they stand on climate change. You may also want to look up your Federal candidates.

Step 2: Ask your politician or candidate to meet with you

Give their office a call to explain that May 3 is deadline for them to step up and take real climate action, and ask for a meeting to discuss how they will do this. You will probably have to call a few times to lock it in. Persistence pays off with pollies!

Step 3: Prepare for your meeting

Write what you want from them on a BIG piece of paper to take into your meeting:

Here are our demands:

1. No new coal, oil and gas projects, including the Adani mine.

2. 100% renewable energy generation & exports by 2030

3. Fund a just transition & job creation for all fossil-fuel industry workers.

Explain:

1. Why you are taking part in the Global #ClimateStrike.

2. What climate action looks like to you

3. What you want your politician to do.

Invite some fellow school strikers to attend the meeting with you.

Step 4: Meet with your politician.

Meet with your politician to discuss your 3 points:

1. Tell them why you care and are taking part in the day of action

2. Outline the climate action you expect all politicians to take

3. Ask them to make concrete commitments in the meeting

Note down their responses and let them know you’ll be sharing their answers with other school students. Take a selfie with them to share on social media.

Step 5: Tell us how you went

Post a photo and short report back in the school strike discussion group or email us at info@schoolstrike4climate.com to let us know how your meeting went.

School Strike 4 Climate Australia pays our respect to Traditional Owners who have cared for this land for tens of thousands of years. We acknowledge that this land was stolen from them, and that sovereignty has never been ceded. There can be no climate justice without justice for First Nations people.
